by Koren Clark
Montessori International December 2020
I am writing this article during the global Covid-19 pandemic, as I retreat in my home and worry that those in the outside world harbour a life-threatening virus. I’m reflecting on a phenomenon that took the world by storm earlier this year: the sight of millions of people rising up to stand against racism and state-sponsored violence against black people.
This moment, and the intersection of the virus and racism, has raised potent questions for me as a black Montessorian. To what extent is racism like the virus? Can I be an asymptomatic carrier of racism? And perhaps most importantly, how does Montessorian philosophy help me heal myself and my society?

"Montessori children are empowered every day to solve problems autonomously in the classroom. When Montessori teachers embed critical consciousness strength building in each classroom, Montessori students can learn to effectively solve big problems in society, and gain the decolonial lens necessary to give them what they need for their ultimate freedom and full expression of their humanity.” —Koren Clark
This quote from Koren Clark came from an article entitled “DECOLONIZING MONTESSORI: AN ANTIRACIST APPROACH TO OUR PRACTICE” that appeared in the latest issue of MONTESSORI LIFE.
The author of the article, Adrienne Anderson analyzes Koren’s decolonial theory of practice along with Ashley Causey-Golden, Beverly Tatum, and Ibram X Kendi.

In this paper I talk about how Authentic Montessori, honors the true meaning of education as the unleashing of what’s within and meets the needs of our culturally diverse students “by any means necessary.”
I examine Malcom X’s controversial assertion where he implies that the established rules of our society may have to be broken to serve the needs of humanity and compare it to the teaching methods educators lock themselves into becoming non-adherent of education as a vehicle of liberation.
“We declare our right on this earth, to be a human being, to be respected as a human being in this society, on this earth, in this day, which we intend to bring into existence by any means
What rules do we need to break to salvage our humanity today in times of COVID?
