The Cleansing Breath

Continuing from my last post - This Pandemic is affecting our lungs, our breath, and our collective life source. Yet simply paying attention and giving gratitude to the subtle work of our breath is healing. I will be sharing with you a series of four breathing techniques that you can do depending on what your needs are. The cleansing breath, the energy breath, the clearing breath, and the fire breath. Today I will focus on the cleansing breath.


Believe it or not most of us breathe incorrectly. We breathe from our chest rather than dropping our breath to our diaphragm. Conscious breathing from the diaphragm can give you miraculous results. It is always important that you are in a comfortable position when you are beginning your breathing techniques. Place your hands below your belly button and breathe in and out making sure to fill your abdomen like a balloon. If you want to imagine what correct breathing looks like imagine a sleeping baby whose stomach rises and falls with each breath.

The cleansing breath is a helpful breath to learn in these times of unrest. The cleansing breath just like water can clean our windshield and allow for a clearer vision, filling up our body with our cleansing breath can bring us in tune with our body, allowing us to be more responsive to our body’s needs which can help us detect any weakness in our bodily systems. For the cleansing breath beginners can simply breathe in 7 seconds through their nose, hold for 3 seconds and exhale for 10 seconds and hold for another 3 seconds. Repeat this pattern 7 to 12 times. For those who are more advanced with breathing techniques, breath in for 8 seconds, hold for 5 seconds and exhale for 16 seconds then hold for another 5 seconds. Repeat this pattern 10- 16 times.
